FERPA and Confidentiality
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) is a federal law that provides students the right to inspect and review education records, the right to seek to amend those records and to limit disclosure of information from the records. The intent of the legislation is to protect the rights of students and to ensure the privacy and accuracy of education records. Education records are defined as those records which directly relate to a student and are maintained by an educational agency or institution or by a party acting on behalf of that institution. Any educational institution that receives funds under any program administered by the U.S. Secretary of Education is bound by FERPA requirements.
Although there are some exceptions, as a general rule, 大象传媒 Western will not disclose to third parties personally identifiable information from a student’s education records without the student’s written consent. This includes a resident鈥檚 conduct record or conduct status. In order for the Conduct Officer to discuss a resident鈥檚 conduct case with you or anything else that is covered by FERPA. A FERPA waiver must be filled out by the resident and turned into their Conduct Officer. Residents receive FERPA waivers attached to their Hearing Notification letter. They may also contact their Conduct Officer for the FERPA form via email or phone.
