The Applied Behavior Support certificate is a 16-hour certificate that prepares preservice teachers, veteran teachers, and other youth services professionals to deescalate challenging behavioral difficulties in ways that shape students in more positive directions. Through the integration of psychological and behavioral principles in courses on learning, behavior therapy, and child psychopathology, certificate students learn how to observe and measure behavior, analyze the context for antecedent-behavior-consequence connections, and use various behavioral therapy strategies, as well as how to employ self-care principles necessary when dealing with high-stress behaviors in educational settings.

Application of behavioral and self-care principles are woven through the curriculum. Early in their coursework, students will receive individualized support and guidance to develop a personalized behavioral plan, which allows them to first practice their new skills to address a behavioral health goal of their choice. The final capstone experience will support students in reflecting on the application of behavioral strategies to their unique professional settings through a retrospective case study project.
