The Governor鈥檚 Award is sponsored by the 大象传媒 Council on Public Higher Education and will be presented this week in Jefferson City.

Dr. Hart has been at 大象传媒 Western since 2017, teaching general studies history as well as more specialized upper-division courses.

鈥淢O West is fortunate to have such a compassionate and creative leader as Dr. Hart,鈥 said Dr. Elizabeth Kennedy, 大象传媒 Western鈥檚 president. 鈥淔urthering our state-appointed applied learning mission, she provides unique learning opportunities outside of the classroom, including museum and cemetery tours, and alternative assignments that tap into students鈥 strengths in producing scholarly research projects. And she is beloved by her students.鈥

Dr. Hart views the teaching of history as 鈥渉elping students understand how we arrived here, wherever 鈥榟ere鈥 is. What happened in the past continues to impact who we are.鈥 She believes history goes beyond memorizing names and dates. 鈥淲e try to answer the hows and whys, and to humanize the past,鈥 she said. 鈥淚鈥檓 a social historian, so I鈥檓 really interested in history from the 鈥榖ottom up鈥 – how did everyday people experience the world around them?鈥

To help her students develop critical thinking skills, she makes sure they engage with historical sources deeper than surface level. 鈥淭hese sources are making arguments,鈥 she said. 鈥淲hat are they trying to convince you of, and how? What can we read between the lines, and how can we connect all of the pieces together? And they can ask the same questions of current sources, approaching news stories and speeches the way they do historical documents.鈥

Dr. Hart received her bachelor鈥檚 degree from the University of Southern Indiana, and both her master鈥檚 and doctoral degrees from the University of Cincinnati. She previously taught as a visiting professor at the University of Florida, and as adjunct faculty at the University of Cincinnati and Xavier University.

News-Press NOW: Shortages and a history of sacrifice /news/2020/05/03/news-press-now-shortages-and-a-history-of-sacrifice/ Sun, 03 May 2020 15:03:51 +0000 /news/?p=9736

It鈥檚 tough to write a column in advance when you鈥檙e dealing with a subject described as a 鈥渕oving target.鈥 I鈥檓 talking, of course, about COVID-19 and its attendant problems.

So many things we don鈥檛 know, or situations change suddenly: Is there a vaccine for this virus? Should we wear masks? When will we feel comfortable shaking hands with strangers again or being out in a crowd?

Here鈥檚 one: Will we face food shortages and be asked 鈥 or forced 鈥 to cut back? This seems possible in light of meat-packing plants such as Smithfield, Tyson, Cargill and JBS USA closing or slowing down production in recent weeks.

If so, it wouldn鈥檛 be the first time. There was sugar and gasoline rationing during World War II and the Truman Administration鈥檚 鈥淢eatless Tuesday鈥 campaign in October 1947. The latter initiative was brought about not by a shortage, but to send food to European nations hit hard by the war.

Dr. Evan Hart, an assistant professor of history at 大象传媒, said our willingness to sacrifice extends all the way back to the American Revolution. 鈥淭hen,鈥 she said, 鈥渢he colonists boycotted English goods that they loved, like tea.鈥 The boycotts were conducted in the name of patriotism.

Meatless Tuesday actually has its origins in the days preceding World War I, she added.

For a 17-year-old devoted to music, a week or two from heading to college, the allure proved too great to ignore. Less than 100 miles from his doorstep, the royalty of rock would convene.

Ditching his summer job early, the teenager answered this call, a decision about which he remains grateful.

鈥淚 had no idea that this was going to turn into some kind of cultural watershed moment,鈥 Dr. Daniel Trifan [professor emeritus of history] says now. 鈥淎ll we knew is this was going to be the rock concert to top everything.鈥

That was Woodstock, billed as 鈥渢hree days of peace and music.鈥 It began 50 years ago today.
