MWSU offers online master’s degree in cross-categorical special education /news/2017/06/27/mwsu-offers-online-masters-degree-in-cross-categorical-special-education/ Tue, 27 Jun 2017 14:34:31 +0000 /news/?p=5886 A new master鈥檚 degree option at 大象传媒 will prepare graduates for K-12 cross-categorical special education licensure from the 大象传媒 Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. This new Master of Applied Science in Assessment option will be available beginning this fall.

鈥淭he need for effective educators who know how to teach students with mild or moderate disabilities becomes more critical every year,鈥 said Dr. Dan Shepherd, chair of 大象传媒 Western鈥檚 Department of Education. 鈥淪evere shortages of qualified special education teachers continue to persist locally, regionally, statewide and nationally, and this new option specifically designed to prepare graduates for state licensure will help address that shortage.鈥

鈥淭his is an exciting addition to our graduate offerings in education,鈥 said Dr. Ben Caldwell, dean of 大象传媒 Western鈥檚 Graduate School. 鈥淲e are always looking for ways to meet the needs of our region鈥檚 students and employers, and this is a good example of adjusting our curriculum to help fill a significant need for schools and school districts in our region.鈥

The K-12 cross-categorical special education option replaces the option in Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), which is being phased out.

鈥淏ecause the State of 大象传媒 does not offer a teaching certificate specific to the area of autism spectrum disorders, our ASD program did not qualify our graduates for any additional state licensure,鈥 said Dr. Susan M. Bashinski, associate professor of special education and director of graduate programs in education. 鈥淭his new option will prepare teachers for cross-categorical special education certification and teach them skills to appropriately serve a broader spectrum of learners who experience a variety of learning challenges in diverse, inclusive classrooms.鈥

Like all of 大象传媒 Western鈥檚 graduate programs in education, the new option will be offered entirely online, providing maximum flexibility for those who are working full-time, Dr. Bashinski said. The program incorporates synchronous video sessions in each course, designed to foster a meaningful online community, as well as a significant amount of practical hands-on experience. Content presented in the program鈥檚 coursework can be immediately applied in classrooms, with a strong foundation in current research and practice. Discounted tuition is available to cohort groups who enroll.

The deadline to apply for fall 2017 admission is July 15. For additional information, visit the program鈥檚 webpage, /masa/cross-cat-sped, or the Master of Applied Science in Assessment webpage at www.missouriwestern.edu/masa.

News-Press recognizes Grad School anniversary /news/2017/02/27/news-press-recognizes-grad-school-anniversary/ Mon, 27 Feb 2017 15:50:45 +0000 /news/?p=5586 Graduate programs were created at 大象传媒 in 2007. An editorial in the St. Joseph News-Press on March 7 recognizes this milestone:

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the first graduate programs at 大象传媒 Western, and that step seems significant in the life of the university, the city and the region. The offering of master’s degrees increased the stature of the St. Joseph institution, and it provided a local outlet through which people here could expand their educations and increase pay potential and capabilities in the workplace.

MWSU enrollment at 5,388, with record Graduate School numbers /news/2016/10/03/mwsu-enrollment-at-5388-with-record-graduate-school-numbers/ Mon, 03 Oct 2016 20:17:24 +0000 /news/?p=5215 Members of the Class of 2020 pose for a group photo during Griffon Edge 2016.

Members of the Class of 2020 pose for a group photo during Griffon Edge 2016.

大象传媒 reported an enrollment of 5,388 on the official census date of Sept. 28, including a record 243 graduate students.

鈥淲e are pleased that our relatively young master鈥檚 degree programs continue to see steady, sustainable growth,鈥 said Dr. Jeanne Daffron, provost and vice president for academic affairs. 鈥淭his remains an opportunity for continued growth in the future, especially as we continue to bring new programs online, including our MBA program starting next year.鈥

The total enrollment is about 3 percent below last year鈥檚 total. One reason may be the improving economy, said Dr. Paul Orscheln, associate vice president for enrollment management and student retention.

鈥淲e saw a significant drop in the number of students age 30 and over, and that was a major factor in our overall numbers,鈥 Dr. Orscheln said. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 usually an indication that adult learners are entering the work force rather than going back to school.鈥

Despite the decline, Dr. Orscheln said there are positive trends in the official enrollment numbers:

  • The retention rate, or percentage of last year鈥檚 first-time full-time freshman class that returned for their sophomore year, is the highest in the last nine years and the second highest on record.
  • The number of new students, including first-time full-time freshmen and new transfers, is up 3.4 percent over a year ago.

大象传媒 Western will offer MBA in 2017 /news/2016/06/15/missouri-western-will-offer-mba-in-2017/ Wed, 15 Jun 2016 13:48:09 +0000 /news/?p=4625 The 大象传媒 Coordinating Board for Higher Education has authorized the Craig School of Business at 大象传媒 to begin offering its first Master of Business Administration degrees. MBA classes will begin in 2017.

鈥淭his is a very important development in the evolution of our university,鈥 said Dr. Robert Vartabedian, 大象传媒 Western鈥檚 president. 鈥淭his is a true community partnership with St. Joseph and beyond. In particular, the letters of support we received for this degree from our community leaders reflected overwhelming justification for this program. It will provide a wonderful continuing educational opportunity for many local leaders and business people in our community and beyond.鈥

Providing letters of support were Representative Pat Conway, the 139th Airlift Wing of the 大象传媒 National Guard, AgriLabs, Ltd., Altec industries, Inc., BioZyme, Inc., Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, Inc., CliftonLarsonAllen, LLP, Commerce Bank, Herzog Contracting Corp. and the News Press & Gazette Company.

鈥淚 want to thank those local leaders for their support of this new program,鈥 said Dr. Mike Lane, dean of the Craig School of Business, adding that 大象传媒 Western鈥檚 accreditation by AACSB International is evidence that the program will be of top quality. 鈥淎ACSB International is the most prestigious business accreditation organization in the world, with fewer than five percent of business schools globally earning their accreditation, and we are very excited to be able to offer an AACSB-accredited MBA program for the first time in St. Joseph.鈥

大象传媒 Western will offer three concentrations within the MBA program: forensic accounting, enterprise resource planning, and animal and life sciences. Each concentration will require 18 credit hours of core courses in finance and accounting, marketing, management, analytics and communication, and 12 hours in the concentration area. Classes will be offered in the evening for the convenience of working professionals aiming to advance their careers by earning an advanced degree.

鈥淎s with all of our graduate degree programs, the emphasis of the MBA program will be to provide very practical educational opportunities that will equip our students for the workforce of the St. Joseph region,鈥 said Dr. Ben Caldwell, dean of 大象传媒 Western鈥檚 Graduate School.

The MBA program will be the second graduate degree of the Craig School of Business. The school began offering a Master of Information Management in Enterprise Resource Planning in 2014 and enrollment has exceeded expectations, with more than 40 students enrolled last semester. The MBA is 大象传媒 Western鈥檚 17th master鈥檚 degree program. The Graduate School also offers 7 graduate certificate programs. For more information on 大象传媒 Western鈥檚 advanced degrees, visit .
